How To Build A Workbench Step By Step

The first step in learning how to build a workbench is to simply select what style of workbench you want. There are many different styles, so do your research first, before you get started. It would not be a good thing to start building a workbench to only then find that it’s not what you want. You will have invested too much money and too much precious time at that stage.

You must next ensure that you are going to work with a wood that you like. Note: if you insist on working with pine, look with the least-knotty wood you can. But the recommendation here is: don’t work with pine when you build a workbench.

Once you’ve selected a wood to work with, the next crucial step in learning how to build a workbench consists of properly choosing a clean, clear workspace. You also need to know how to use all of your tools and power tools. Before you even begin learning how to build a workbench, ensure to yourself that you do have this knowledge and the necessary self-confidence to use the tools effectively without injuring yourself or wrecking the work bench. It’s also imperative that you wear safety goggles the whole time you are using any of your tools.

Note: When learning how to build a workbench, you should already be familiar with some basic concepts and terminology of woodworking, such as making diagonal cuts and so on and so forth. Building a workbench is not a project for a beginner woodworker. You should be intermediate and have some experience.

How To Build A Workbench – Read Closely

Read These Directions Through All the Way Before You Learn How To Build a Workbench, So That You Know What Materials and Tools You’ll Need

Begin the building of the workbench by making its rectangular frame. Take a pair of five-foot-long 2×4 boards and secure them to a pair of 22″ long 2×4 boards. Using a clamp, hold a pair of 32″ 2×4 boards, which will become your workbench legs, to the inside of the rectangular frame. Ensure that these legs are flush to the longest boards of the frame, while being squared with the boards that are the shortest. Then, secure them firmly into place with bolts (including washers and nuts, of course).

Having done the above, turn over the base part of your workbench that you’ve now begun and measure up eight inches, from the floor, along the workbench legs. Clamp two more 2×4 boards to the legs as you just did a short while before. You now have a pair of internal frames that will serve as the bases for both a top workspace and a bottom shelf where you can keep tools and materials at your convenience.

Take five 2×6 boards and find their best faces. Once you’ve determined which boards to use and which faces are their best, lay those face-down. Cut a pair of supports for these boards from a 64″ 2×2 board. Put these two inches in, on either side, from the boards’ edges, and secure them using nails. Now, flip your new creation over and make countersink holes with your power drill. Don’t drill over your nails! Now put your bolts into the countersink holes to secure all together.

Secure the top support pieces to the workbench frame’s sides with bolts. Make your workbench’s bottom shelf with nine 26″ long 1×6 boards nailed together side by side to your workbench’s bottom frame.
