Before you start looking up workbench plans, however, you need to know how to make your selection among the scores of different workbench plans out there.
Workbench Plans – Figure Out The Size
First, figure out how big you want your workbench to be. This is very important. Once you have determined this, you’ll be able to find the workbench plans that give you the proper dimensions and amounts of materials that you’ll want to buy. Measure the dimensions of the space in your workshop, basement, or garage where you’ll be putting the workbench. You need an area that is clean, uncluttered, and not “in the middle of things”.
Next, determine how simple or complex you want the workbench to be. Do you need multiple drawers, or just one? Do you want a second shelf that slides out? Determine these features before you find your workbench plans.
If you want a heavier workbench, find plans that call for your working in oak, maple, ash, etc. If you only require a lighter workbench, the less expensive white pine will do.
Workbench Plans – Start Looking Up The Best Plans
Now that you know the workbench space, area, dimensions, and features, start looking up workbench plans. Many free plans are just as good as plans that you have to pay for, but on the other hand paid for plans are “tried and true” (or should be, in any event). When you find plans that will allow you to build the workbench of your desire, carefully read the specs, directions, materials list, and everything else. Is the plan easy to read? Is it clear and “flowing”? Are the drawings and diagrams well organized and intuitively obvious? Only consider workbench plans that have thees qualities. Once you have found readable plans, ensure that you have or can buy all of the necessary materials and tools. Advanced preparation means everything for your success.
Of course, this article about finding quality workbench plans assumes that you are familiar with the tools that you’ll need to use to build the bench. At least some of these are likely to be power tools, so make sure that you have the necessary familiarity and safety equipment for your safety. Always wear goggles whenever you are sawing or using a power tool to do woodworking. If you are sensitive to sawdust, also wear a filtering mask over your nose and mouth. With your workbench plans in hand, you’re ready to add a great piece of practical furniture to your woodworking area.
